Effectiveness of Management Program for Patients with Sepsis Among Medical Ward Nurses

This quasi-experimental research aimed to determine the effectiveness of the management program for patients with sepsis on knowledge, practices, and sepsis mortality rate in a medical ward in a general hospital during October to December 2023. The study sample consisted of 23 medical ward nurses. The research instruments included the patients with sepsis management program, a demographic data questionnaire, a knowledge test, a practice questionnaire, and a sepsis mortality form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Chi-square test.
The research results revealed that after implementing the program, the participants significantly increased their median knowledge scores on management for patients with sepsis compared with before implementation, from 10.00 to 17.00 out of 20.00 points (p < .001), and the median practice scores for management of patients with sepsis significantly increased compared with before implementation, from 23.00 to 29.00 out of 30.00 points (p < .001). The mortality of sepsis in a medical ward significantly decreased compared with before implementation, from 12.50% to 7.14% (p < .001).
This research suggests that the program could improve knowledge and practices in the management of patients with sepsis among nurses, and reduce the mortality of sepsis in a medical ward. This program should be implemented to promote knowledge and practices in the management of patients with sepsis in other medical units.
