Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the effect of elastic band exercise training on muscle strength in the elderly. In this study, 52 peoples of the elderly aged 60-80 years old were recruited from Saen Udom, Chae Ramae, Mueang Ubon Ratchathani, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The participants were randomly separated into two groups: 26 peoples elastic band exercise training participants and 26 peoples control participants. The training group participated elastic band exercise training for 45 min per day, 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) for 8 consecutive weeks. The control group went about their everyday lives as usual. Muscle strength were measured before and after a 8-week training period. The data from pre and after training were then compared and analyzed using the paired samples t-test and the independent samples t-test. The test for statistical significance at the .05 level.

The results were as follow: after the 8-week training,

            1) The elastic band exercise training group showed substantially improvement in leg muscle strength (1.37% respectively, p < .05) . In addition, elastic band exercise training group showed a substantial increase in experimental group compared with control group (1.37% และ -1.24%, p < .05)

            2) The elastic band exercise training group showed substantially improvement in leg muscle strength compared with control group (1.37% และ p = .001) at significance 0.05.

Conclusion: Eight weeks of elastic band exercise training is effective in improving for leg muscle strength in the elderly.
