Empowering Student Health Leaders in Secondary School Smoking Prevention Campaign: The Role of a Community Nurse

Tobacco is a dangerous addictive substance that is causing an increasing number of deaths among people around the world which can be prevented. Currently, smoking is found among youth and there are more new smokers every year. These things cause long-term health problems. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problem of youth smoking by a group of youth together. The youth’s student leaders in health are important forces in the campaign to reduce smoking behavior. The Ministry of Public Health has realized the potential of youth in many dimensions. One of them is a dimension of driving health. Therefore, there is an idea of encouraging youth to participate in taking care of one’s own health, family, and community health. Community nurses have an important role in developing smoke-free educational institutions. The potential of youth is developed by empowering them to have knowledge, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and increased abilities to practices. In this article the concept of empowerment is applied to develop the potential of student health leaders among a secondary school to reduce smoking behavior.
