Breastfeeding Promotion among Mothers after Cesarean Section of Sick Newborns: Nurses’ Important Role

At present, the trend for caesarean section is increasing. Caesarean section may be a barrier to breastfeeding, such as drowsiness from the effects of sedative drugs, fatigue and surgical wound pain. As a result, breastfeeding initiation is delayed than usual, especially for the caesarean section mothers separated from their babies in the postpartum period because the babies have health problems that must be referred to Sick Newborn Unit or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Consequently, the babies are not stimulated for breastfeeding from birth, and the mothers are not stimulated for lactation. This article aims to propose knowledge related to nurse’s an important role in promoting breastfeeding among mothers after cesarean section of sick newborns by applying 10 steps to successful breast feeding to sick newborns in order to be the nursing guideline to stimulate faster milk production and secretion with adequate supply to keep the sick newborns healthy and recover from the illness faster.
