Stigma and Self-Stigma Towards Mental Health Problems in Nursing Students: A Case Study in the Northeastern Region of Thailand

Purpose: To study the relationship between personal factors and stigma, as well as self-stigma in attitude toward mental health problems among nursing students.
Design: Correlational descriptive research
Method: The sample consisted of 410 nursing students. Stratified random sampling was used to select the participants. Data were collected using the Stigma and Self-Stigma Scales related to attitude toward mental health problems. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent t-tests, point-biserial correlation, and Pearson correlation statistics.
Main findings: The study found that nursing students exhibited a moderate level of stigma and self-stigma related to attitudes toward mental health problems (M=9.89, S.D.=2.34) There were no statistically significant differences in overall stigma and self-stigma scores among students in different academic years (F=.48, p=.690). Personal factors such as gender (rpb=-.171, p=.01) and current psychiatric illness (rpb=.113, p=.022) were significantly related to overall stigma and self-stigma related to attitudes toward mental health problems.
Conclusion and recommendations: Nursing education institutions should incorporate topics related to mental health at all year levels of the nursing curriculum to raise awareness and reduce stigma and self-stigma towards mental health problems among nursing students.
