Nursing Care of the Patient with Central Line - Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) : Comparative Case Studies

Patients treated with central venous catheterization, Central Line-associated Bloodstream Infection, ComplicationAbstract
Central Line-associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) is a common complication in patients receiving central venous catheterization. CLABSI affects the patients’ need to stay longer in hospital and increases the cost of caring. It can lead to organ failure and death. In this regard, nurses need to have a plan and provide nursing care based on standard guidelines for patients with central venous catheterization to prevent CLABSI.
The purpose of this article is to review the nursing process in two case studies who were treated in the semi-critical ward with the crisis of sepsis from pleural effusion and end-stage chronic kidney disease. Patients were treated with central venous catheterization and infected with CLABSI. Patients had many factors that increase the risk for CLABSI. After early detection of CLABSI, patients were received intensive nursing care, periodic monitoring and evaluation of signs and symptomatic change as well as the care of patients according to the treatment of both dependent and independent care. In addition, standard care should be provided based on the hospital’s CLABSI standards. Finally, the two patients in this study had health improvement and were able to discharge from the hospital.
