Abstract

Relapse in people with schizophrenia affects the patients themselves, their families, and their communities. Community-based care for psychiatric patients is crucial. The objective of this quasi-experimental research was to compare the relapse rate in people with schizophrenia and their appointment attendance rates before and after receiving the community participation care under the New Normal. The sample comprised the dyad of 35 people with schizophrenia and their 35 caregivers, and 15 village health volunteers, 10 village chiefs, one police officer, and one local government officer. This research used the community participation framework. Research instruments were the Family Caregiving Program and the Community Mental Health of Caring for Risky Chronic Manual. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Paired-Samples t-tests.

The results revealed that: 1) the relapse rate after acquiring community participation care under the New Normal showed a statistically significant decrease compared with before (p<.05), and 2) the patient appointment attendance rate after receiving community participation care under the New Normal showed a statistically significant increase compared with before (p<.05). This program can be used for other communities for planning the community participation care for people with schizophrenia to prevent relapse continueingly.
