Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the effect of using a planning program to restore the ability to perform the daily routines of elderly patients with pneumonia in Chiang Kham Hospital. It is a semi-experimental study. Two groups measured the results after the experiment. The sample group is 58 elderly patients, both male and female, treated for pneumonia, specifically selected and divided into an experimental group and a control group of 29 people each. The research tools were a discharge planning program to improve the ability of elderly patients with pneumonia to perform activities of daily living, and a questionnaire assessing the activities of daily living of the elderly. Descriptive statistics, including frequency distribution, percentage, average, and standard deviation were applied. Additionally, inferential statistics were used, which included Mann-Whitney U statistics, chi-square statistics and Fisher’s exact test.

The results showed that the ability to perform daily activities in both groups was at the level of self-reliance. The experimental group had a higher average score than the control group (  = 19.48, S.D. = 1.184) and (  = 18.86, S.D. = 2.216), respectively; the comparison of the ability to perform daily routines between the groups was not statistically significant (Z = 1.021, p > .05). The experimental group did not have a readmission patient (100%), while the control group had two patients (6.90%) within a 4-week period. In conclusion, both groups of elderly patients showed no statistically significant differences in either ADL ability or readmission rate.
