Nursing care for elderly patients with dementia in long term care system : A comparative 2 Case Study

Abstract

     This research was case study aimed to provide guidelines for nursing practice for elder with dementia in the long-term care system. The case study of purposive sampling of 2 patient, elder with dementia receiving care in the long-term care system at Sichomphu Hospital since October 2022 to January 2023. The instruments to collect the data consist of data record forms from medical records. Health assessment forms, interviews, observation, data collection, analysis, nursing diagnosis, nursing practice, evaluate and summarize the results.

     Result : The first patient, a 83 year old male, his wife is the main caregiver, no co-morbidities, no physical disabilities. The patient unable to do daily activities alone and has inappropriate behavior and emotions. The second patient, a 90 year old female, Her daughter is the main caregiver. The patient has underlying with hypertension, osteoporosis, and scoliosis. Partially able to perform daily routine, having inappropriate behavior and emotions. Two patients with dementia received care following the nursing process together with Demetia Management (A-N) guidelines. It was found that the first patient requires caring of basic daily routine. The second patient partially able to perform daily routine. Both patients have  improved behavior and emotions, safe, no complications. Caregivers have knowledge and understanding of caring for elderly patients with dementia. The responsibility of caring is reduced. Patients and caregivers have a good quality of life and are very satisfied with the care system.
