Advanced colorectal cancer patients who under palliative care and undergone
ostomies suffered are suffering from leakages problem of liquid-like stool collected with
commercial colostomy bags. The over curvature surface of the patients’ pelvis are causing
detachment of the commercial colostomy bags, hence leakages of feces occurred to the
surrounding skin leading to severe peristomal skin associated dermatitis. The researcher
consulted wound care specialists, review the concepts and principles of wound care and
nursing care for ostomy site. Finding available resources that are easy to find and accessible,
is a thin plastic handle bag that is applied to collect the feces from an artificial fistula
(stoma). Using Vaseline Petroleum Gel to applied around the stoma to seal plastic bag to the
body and reducing peristomal skin irritation. The method is bringing in a thin plastic bag with
handle to cut in accordance with P.S. Model as a collection bag to collect feces. Using
Vaseline Petroleum Gel to coat the surrounding skin of the stoma will enhance the surface
adherence of P.S. Model colostomy bag and protects from surrounding skin from irritation.
Application of plaster to the top edges of the P.S. Model colostomy bag also reduces the risk
of detachment. The amount of collected of feces into the colostomy bag must be handled
accordingly as the risk of detachment of the colostomy bag may occur as the amount of
feces increase in the colostomy bag. This innovative method was carried out on to 3
different patients with severe peristomal skin irritation between 8 June 2017 and 30 June
2018, findings showed that all 3 patients and their families have accepted and satisfied with
the outcome of this method compared to the conventional method. This study also found
that secondary wounds caused by skin irritations from the conventional method were cured
in all 3 cases. Two of the three patients continued the use of P.S. Model colostomy bag until
their death. An additional method has also been developed of which the top edge of the
bag was folded and secured with a plaster to reduce the risk of odour. This innovation
method can be recommended in collecting liquid-liked feces from stoma regardless the
pelvis surface area is not flat and taut, besides it also protects the peristomal skin from
irritation.
