This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy sachets as an adjunct to standard treatment on pain levels and patient satisfaction among postoperative abdominal surgery patients. A total of 60 participants were recruited and equally assigned into two groups: a control group (n = 30) and an experimental group (n = 30). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, and differences between groups before and after the intervention were analyzed using an independent t-test
The results showed that the pre-intervention pain scores were not significantly different between the two groups (t = 0.94, p = 0.350). Following the use of aromatherapy sachets after abdominal surgery, at 4 hours postoperatively, the mean pain scores in the control and experimental groups were 7.53 ± 1.41 and 7.27 ± 1.11, respectively, with no statistically significant difference (t = 0.81, p = 0.419). However, during 8–48 hours postoperatively, the experimental group demonstrated significantly lower mean pain scores compared to the control group at the 0.05 level of statistical significance. Regarding satisfaction, the experimental and control groups had mean satisfaction scores of 4.41 ± 0.83 and 3.30 ± 0.21, respectively. The difference between the groups was statistically significant (t = -7.10, p = 0.001) at the 0.05. Therefore, aromatherapy sachets should be considered as an adjunct to standard postoperative care in patients undergoing abdominal surgery, as they may help reduce pain and enhance the effectiveness of pain management in the postoperative period.
