Factors Influencing E-cigarette Preventive Behaviors of High School Students in Chanthaburi Province
Abstract
The purpose of this predictive research is to examine: Firstly, the behavior of preventing e-cigarette use among high school students. Secondly, the influence of attitudes on e-cigarette use, peer group influence, and family ties in preventing e-cigarette use. The sample group consisted of 247 high school students from the Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province. The research instrument was a questionnaire divided into five sections: personal information, attitudes toward preventing e-cigarette use, peer group influence, family ties, and behavior to prevent e-cigarette use. Data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results of the study revealed the following: The overall behavior to prevent e-cigarette use was at a high level (M = 3.59, SD = 1.10). Family ties were the most influential factor in preventing e-cigarette use (ß = .631). This was followed by attitude towards e-cigarette use (ß = .341) and peer influence (ß = .183). These three variables together explained 51.6% of the variance in e-cigarette use prevention behavior (p < .001).
Public health personnel should prioritize factors on family bonding, attitudes towards e-cigarette use, and peer group influence in preventing e-cigarette use among high school students.
