Abstract

Utilization of internet resources and standard textbooks in emergency medicine: A comparison study in correction among medical students
Introduction: The use of technology is increasing rapidly and growing technological influence can be seen in modern medicine. In emergencies, precise diagnosis and timing are keys to correct crises. The decision to make a quick and proper treatment based on the right information contributes to the effectiveness of the practice.
Objective: To compare the accuracy and the duration of the response to validated emergency medicine questions between the use of standard medical textbooks and the use of the Internet or medical applications among medical students.
Methods: A cross-over study was conducted in 40 volunteers. All emergency medicine questions were validated by the pilot study group and the difficulty index of 0.2 or less was accepted. The statistical relationship was tested by the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test with
the statistical significance at p value of 0.05 or less.
Results: The median of correct answers using standard medical textbooks and the internet resources was 4 equally (interquartile range 2.5-4.5 and 3.0-5.0, respectively) with p value of 0.116. The median of time spent answering the questions using standard medical
textbooks and the internet resources were 4.285 (interquartile range 3.0-6.0) and 3.333 minutes (interquartile range 3.0-4.017) respectively, with p value less than 0.001.
Conclusions: Utilization of internet and reliable medical applications in emergency medicine, which are up-to-date and referenced, is less time-consuming and able to provide correct answers equivalently to standard medical textbooks.
