The Effective of Hip Abduction Pillow on Pain while Rolling, Incidence of Pressure Ulcer, and Hip Dislocation in Patients After Hip Replacement

Abstract

The purposes of this quasi-experimental research with two groups pretest-posttest design were to examine the effects of a hip abduction pillow on pain while rolling, the incidence of pressure ulcers, and hip dislocation in patients after hip replacement. Samples were 64 patients after hip replacement, selected by the purposive sampling method and were assigned to 2 groups; the experimental and the control groups. Research instruments included 1) the hip abduction pillow,  2) pain scale, 3) incidence of pressure ulcer record, and 4) hip dislocation record. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Wilcoxon Signed rank test, and Fisher's exact test. The results showed that patients who used the hip abduction pillows after hip replacement surgery had significantly lower pain scores than patients who did not use the hip abduction pillows (p<0.001). However, the incidences of pressure ulcers and hip dislocation between the two groups were not different. Therefore, nurses should use this hip abduction pillow in other patients after hip replacement.
