The results of the program to promote the use of nursing practices and the duration of the ventilator divorce in hemorrhagic stroke patients

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study, using a two-group posttest control group design, aimed to examine the effects of a program promoting guideline adherence on nurses' practices and the time to initiate ventilator weaning in patients with hemorrhagic stroke. The sample included 15 professional nurses working in the neurosurgery intensive care unit and 32 patients with ruptured cerebral aneurysms receiving care in the same unit at Buddhachinaraj Hospital. The patients were divided into a control group and an experimental group, with 16 patients in each. The control group followed standard extubation practices, while the experimental group received a program promoting extubation guidelines. The data collection instruments included a program promoting ventilator weaning practices, a manual guideline for professional nurses on weaning protocols for stroke patients, an observation form for professional nurses' practices, and a ventilator weaning record form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and an independent t-test.

The research results indicated that professional nurses had higher adherence scores to the weaning protocol for mechanical ventilation in stroke patients after receiving the promotion program compared to before. Furthermore, the experimental group initiated the use of the guidelines significantly earlier than the control group, with statistical significance at p < .05.

The program promoting the use of ventilator weaning guidelines in patients with hemorrhagic stroke helped professional nurses improve their skills in using the guidelines, and patients were assessed for ventilator weaning more quickly.
