Effectiveness of a nursing practice guideline for postoperative abdominal pain management at the 50th Anniversary Special/1 and Monks Ward, Uthai Thani Hospital

This quasi-experimental study with a two-group design aimed to examine the effectiveness of a nursing practice guideline for postoperative pain management in patients undergoing abdominal surgery at the 50th Anniversary Special/1 and Monks Ward at Uthai Thani Hospital. The sample consisted of 10 nurses who provided care for postoperative abdominal surgery patients, and 60 patients who underwent abdominal surgery. The patients were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 30 patients in each group. The research instruments included: 1) a nursing practice guideline for postoperative abdominal pain management, 2) a patient satisfaction questionnaire on pain management, and 3) a satisfaction assessment form for nurses regarding the guideline. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and an independent t-test.
The results revealed that at 24, 48, and 72 hours postoperatively, the experimental group reported significantly lower pain scores than the control group (p < .05). Additionally, 97% of the patients expressed the highest level of satisfaction with the nursing practice guideline. Among the nurses, 70% reported the highest level of satisfaction with its use in postoperative pain management.
It is recommended that the nursing practice guideline for postoperative abdominal pain management be implemented starting in the recovery room to reduce early postoperative pain, minimize medication use, and be further developed into guidelines for other types of postoperative pain management.
