Effects of using the practice guideline for permanent pacemaker patient on complication and quality of life after permanent pacemaker implantation

This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group pretest-posttest design to compare complications and quality of life among patients following permanent pacemaker implantation between those receiving care based on a nursing practice guideline and those receiving standard care. A total of 60 participants were purposively selected and divided equally into a control group and an experimental group (30 participants each). The control group received standard nursing care, while the experimental group received care according to the researcher-developed nursing practice guideline. The guideline included four phases: (1) pre-implantation care, (2) post-implantation care, (3) patient counseling and follow-up two weeks after discharge, and (4) follow-up via telephone one month after discharge. Data collection tools included a personal information record, a complication recording form, and a quality-of-life questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage, Chi-square test, paired t-test, and independent t-test.
The results showed no significant difference in the incidence of complications between the experimental and control groups. The overall quality of life before the intervention did not differ significantly between the groups. However, after the intervention, a statistically significant difference (p < .05) was found: the experimental group demonstrated a good overall quality of life, while the control group maintained a moderate overall quality of life.
The application of a nursing practice guideline for patients with permanent pacemaker implantation is beneficial and contributes to the improvement of patients' quality of life. It is recommended for use to enhance the quality of patient care.
