Effects of empowerment program on early mother-infant bonding and first breast feeding in delivery room of mothers attending antenatal care at Ban Thi Hospital, Lamphun Province

This quasi-experimental study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design. The objectives were to: 1) compare mothers’ knowledge regarding early mother–infant bonding and breastfeeding initiation in the delivery room before and after participation in the empowerment program; and 2) compare mothers’ practices regarding early mother–infant bonding and breastfeeding initiation in the delivery room before and after participation in the program. The participants were 24 mothers who received antenatal care and gave birth at Ban Thi Hospital, Lamphun Province. They were recruited using purposive sampling between February and August, 2025. The research instruments consisted of: 1) an empowerment program for promoting early mother–infant bonding and breastfeeding initiation in the delivery room; 2) a questionnaire on demographic and pregnancy-related characteristics; 3) a knowledge assessment; and 4) a practice assessment. The instruments had a Content Validity Index (CVI) of 0.82 and a reliability coefficient of 0.80. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a dependent t-test.
The results showed that the mean knowledge score regarding early mother–infant bonding and breastfeeding initiation increased significantly from 7.12 to 9.83 (p-value < .001). Similarly, the mean practice score increased significantly from 17.67 to 28.17 (p-value < .001).
The findings suggest that the empowerment program was effective in improving mothers’ knowledge and promoting practices related to early mother–infant bonding and breastfeeding initiation in the delivery room, particularly in this multicultural population, in which most participants were of Myanmar ethnicity. The program may be applied in other healthcare settings with similar contexts.
