Abstract

Drowning deaths were a major cause of mortality among children under 15 years of age in Thailand. This study aimed to examine the levels of knowledge, skills, and the relationship between knowledge and skills in drowning prevention among children aged 6–15 years old. The sample consisted of 158 students aged 6–15 years, selected through stratified random sampling. The study area was Wang Nam Khiao district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. Data were collected between November to December 2024. The research instruments included a knowledge questionnaire and a skill assessment form on water survival and victim assistance, both of which had undergone quality verification. The statistics used for data analysis included percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The research findings revealed that the majority of the sample had knowledge regarding drowning prevention at a high level (Mean = 12.41, S.D. = 2.35). The water survival skills of the majority of the sample were at a moderate level (Mean = 1.03, S.D. = 0.76), and water rescue skills were at a high level (Mean = 3.02, S.D. = 0.68). The correlation analysis found that knowledge had a statistically significant positive relationship with the skills required for drowning prevention (p < 0.01). In conclusion, the majority of participants had a high level of knowledge regarding drowning prevention and water rescue skills, while their survival skills were at a moderate level. It is recommended that schools implement systematic survival swimming and rescue training programs integrated into health and physical education curricula, while also strengthening the role of families and communities in promoting water safety skills among children.
