Situation and Risk Area Analysis of Drowning of children under 15 years old in Health Region 6th, 2017-2021

Abstract

The purpose of this Cross-sectional descriptive study were to analyze the circumstance of fatal drowning of children under 15 years old in Health Region 6^th and analyzing drowning risk area. This study collected data of drowning victims at the age under 15 years old from 311 death certificates of Strategic and Planning Division, Office of Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health between B.E. 2560 - 2564  which had cause of death from diagnosis according to ICD-10, code W65-W74. Data were analyzed using number, percentage, proportion and children drowning mortality rate per one hundred thousand at 95% of confidence interval. The study found that Health Region 6^th had drowning mortality rate of children under 15 years old in B.E. 2560–2564 were 7.9, 6.7, 7.4, 6.1, and 8.7 respectively. Age between 0-4 years old found to be the most death for 135 persons. Male is mostly drowned which rate equals to 3:1. The most drowning will occur during school break (March-May) for 27.65%. It was found that children drowning mortality rate tend to be increased in B.E. 2564 which increased more than 11.53% when compares to B.E. 2560. During 5 years, Sa Kaeo Province had the highest mortality rate while Samut Prakarn Province had the lowest mortality rate. After analyzing risk area found that Health Region 6^th was the medium risk area of children drowning. Thus, active measures should be operated in Health Region 6^th  for fatal drowning prevention in children under 15 years old should be proceeded consecutively especially high drowning risk area. In this way children will have knowledge and drowning survival skills to reduce the severity of adverse circumstance and prevent any death.
