COMPARISON OF ELECTROMYOGRAPHY BETWEEN ELITE AND NOVICE BODYBUILDERS DURING THE MANDATORY POSES
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to compare electromyographic (EMG) activity between elite bodybuilders and novice bodybuilders during the execution of seven mandatory poses. The sample consisted of 10 elite male bodybuilders, including 3 world champions and 7 Asian champions, as well as 10 novice bodybuilders. EMG signals were recorded from the biceps brachii (BB), triceps brachii (TB), latissimus dorsi (LD), rectus abdominis (RA), rectus femoris (RF), and pectoralis major (PM) while performing the seven mandatory poses: front double biceps (FDB), front lat spread (FLS), side chest (SC), back double biceps (BDB), back lat spread (BLS), side triceps (ST), and abdominals & thighs (AT). The study analyzed the mean and peak EMG values and compared them between the elite and novice bodybuilders. The EMG analysis revealed that the mean and peak TB activity on the left side during FDB and BDB was significantly higher in elite bodybuilders compared to novice bodybuilders (p ≤ 0.001). In contrast, the mean and peak LD activity on both the right and left sides during FLS and BLS was significantly higher in novice bodybuilders than in elite bodybuilders (p < 0.05). Additionally, the mean and peak RF activity on the right side during AT was significantly greater in elite bodybuilders than in novice bodybuilders (p = 0.001). No significant differences were observed for other muscle groups between the two groups. These findings provide insights for developing training programs that optimize muscle activation during mandatory poses. Furthermore, the application of EMG analysis can enhance pose execution techniques, leading to greater precision in training and competition. Future research should explore additional factors influencing muscle activation and expand the sample size to improve the practical applicability of the findings.
