STRESS MANAGEMENT AND THE ABILITY TO ADVERSITY QUOTIENT OF ATHLETES IN THE 49 TH THAILAND UNIVERSITY GAMES

Abstract
This research aimed to study the coping patterns, stress management, and the ability to cope with problems and overcome obstacles of athletes in the 49th University Games of Thailand. The population consisted of athletes of all sports, representing universities under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, who participated in the 49th University Games, the grand round, and a sample of 900 people who answered the stress and stress management assessment of athletes. The multi-stage sampling method was used, including 18 sports out of 36 sports that were competed in and 18 athletes who passed the qualifying round (the final 8 people/team) using the stratified sampling method. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The instruments used were the stress assessment, stress management, and the ability to cope with problems and overcome obstacles of athletes, and the semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, t-test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and the interview results summary. The results of the research found that the overall stress coping of athletes was at a high level ( =3.74). Most of them had frequent sports stress management skills. The ability to face and overcome obstacles was at a high level ( = 3.87). When comparing athletes of different genders and athletes with different experiences in participating in university sports competitions, the ability to face stress was significantly different at the 0.05 level.
