THE ROLE OF SYMBOLS IN COMMUNICATING PHYSICAL EDUCATION PEDAGOGY

Abstract
This academic article examines the role of symbols in the communication of Physical Education as a discipline. The study analyzes the meanings, values, and applications of key symbols associated with Physical Education in both instructional practice and academic communication. The findings identify three primary symbols: Phra Phonbodi, the Olympic rings, and the representative colors of the discipline, namely white, green, and yellow. In instructional contexts, these symbols play a crucial role in cultivating values and ideals that promote holistic human development, encompassing both physical and mental dimensions. Phra Phonbodi symbolizes strength, perseverance, and bodily wholeness, reflecting the central objective of developing students’ physical fitness. The Olympic rings signify unity and friendship among humankind, supporting the cultivation of sportsmanship, equality, and mutual respect. The representative colors further reinforce moral and social values: white symbolizes purity and virtue, green conveys health, and yellow represents energy, brightness, and wisdom. These symbols support symbolic learning, fostering an integrated understanding of physical and mental values that students can apply to live balanced and ethical lives. In academic communication, symbols help translate abstract concepts in Physical Education into concrete and accessible forms, reflecting the discipline’s efforts to convey its identity, meaning, and holistic values. Together, the three symbols form a coherent philosophical framework embodying the ideal of human development that balances physical capability with moral integrity. Therefore, the application of symbols in Physical Education extends beyond content comprehension to the cultivation of values and inspiration, encapsulating the essence of Physical Education as a discipline devoted to holistic human development.
