Results of using a 10-step ladder-based planning model for breastfeeding in first-time postpartum teenage mothers at Nong Khai Hospital.

Abstract

A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design aimed to compare the results of using the 10-step ladder model in breastfeeding among first-time postpartum adolescent mothers at Nongkhai Hospital. A total of 32 sample in first-time postpartum adolescent mothers (<20 years) who delivered at Nong Khai Hospital between December 2024 and July 2025 were recruited. The intervention was based on the TenSteps model for breastfeeding in teenage mothers after their first pregnancy at Nong Khai Hospital and a questionnaire used to collect data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, Friedman test at the statistical significance level of 0.05                                                     

     Results: The sample group had an average age of 17.32 years, most had lower secondary education (46.87%), were unemployed (68.75%), had a monthly income of 5,001-10,000 baht/month (40.63%), were in an extended family (62.50%), had mothers who did not receive antenatal care (12.50%), received antenatal care 5 times or more according to the criteria (46.87%), received their first prenatal care at a gestational age of less than 12 weeks (40.63%), and more than 12 weeks (46.87%). Gestational age at delivery was > 38 - 42 weeks (81.25%), birth weight > 2,500-3,999 grams (78.12%), had abnormal nipple characteristics (9.38 %), and had abnormal areola characteristics (9.38%). Never received breastfeeding advice (34.38%). Comparative experiment found that after using the model, scores of knowledges, skills and breastfeeding behaviors, satisfaction increased significantly at (P-value < .001). The exclusive breastfeeding rate at 6 months was 71.87%.
