Nursing care for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and open cholecystectomy :Two case studies

Abstract

      This study was case study aimed to compare the nursing care of patients undergoing laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy for gallstones through an in-depth examination of two case studies. This is a comparative case study involving two patients who underwent gallbladder surgery, one through laparoscopic and the other through an open cholecystectomy. Patient histories were extracted from medical records, including interviews with patients and their families. The nursing care process involved a five-step framework, assessing health status, collecting and analyzing data using Gordon's 11 functional health patterns, comparing health information, nursing diagnoses preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively within 24 hours.

      Results: Both cases presented with gallstones, but the second case exhibited additional gallbladder inflammation. Divergent surgical interventions were employed, starting laparoscopic for both cases but transitioning to open surgery in the second case due to extensive inflammation, gallbladder necrosis, and adhesions. No postoperative complications were observed in either case. The first patient was diagnosed with six nursing care issues, while the second patient had nine. Preoperative and postoperative nursing interventions focused on pain management, abdominal tightness, and rapid recovery. Hospital stays differed with the first case at 4 days and the second at 8 days due to the latter's severe condition.
