Nursing Care of a Patient with Septic Shock: 2 Case Studies

Abstract

     This study was case study aimed to compare the nursing care of patients facing a sepsis shock situation. Two patients with a sepsis shock situation and being treated at Amphawa Hospital, Samutsongkram, during the year 2023 were selected for the analysis. One of them is a referral patient and another one is a direct admission patient.The nursing care practice was based on the research, which was being searched and specifically planned for the treatment of each patient.
     The result revealed that case 1 was admitted to the emergency unit with fever, lethargy, and bedsores on the coccyx, back, and right arm. The doctor diagnosed case 1 as the Alteration of Conscious, Pneumonia, Infected Bedsore, R/O Sepsis /AKI. Meanwhile, case 2, was admitted with fever, lethargy, unpalatable, melena, and a neck tumor was noticed. The doctor diagnosed case 2 as Sepsis UTI, CA Lymph node. Both cases were treated by the nursing care practice for a sepsis patient. However, case 1 faced life-threatening vital signs and breath failure, hence, the vasopressor drug and endotracheal tube were needed. Case 2 faced a urinary tract infection, unpalatable, paleness, loss of water and mineral balance, with acute kidney failure. These problems from both cases were immediately evaluated by the nurses and treated within an hour, followed by intensive care until the patient was safe from the sepsis and complications. Case 1 was referred to Somdetpraputhalertla Hospital within 3 hours, and Case 2 was admitted to Amphawa Hospital for 5 days before returning home.
