Knowledge and Attitudes of Nurses towards Nursing Records and A Retrospective Descriptive Study of Integrity and Quality of Nursing Records during Transfer for Special Investigations among Nurses at Emergency Medical Service and Referral Unit

This retrospective survey study aimed to 1) examine the integrity and quality of nursing records during transfer for special investigations by registered nurses, 2) explore the knowledge and attitude towards nursing records among registered nurses, and 3) investigate the relationships between personal factors, knowledge and attitudes of registered nurses, and the integrity and quality of nursing records during transfer for special investigations. The study was conducted by analyzing 297 patient transfer records from the Emergency Medical Service and Referral Unit, recorded by 5 registered nurses from January 1, 2023 to October 31, 2024. Data were collected by the following instruments: a questionnaire on demographic information of registered nurses, a questionnaire on knowledge about nursing records during transfer for special investigations, a questionnaire on attitudes towards nursing records, a patient information record form, an integrity assessment form for nursing records during transfer for special investigations, and a quality assessment form for nursing records during transfer for special investigations. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were employed for data analysis.
The findings revealed that the integrity and quality of nursing records during transfer for special investigations were at an excellent level (97.21% and 92.94%, respectively). The registered nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards nursing records during transfer for special investigations were at a high level (90% and 96%, respectively). The duration of work had a very strong negative correlation with the integrity and quality of nursing records (r=-0.966, p=0.008 and r=-0.990, p=0.001, respectively). Moreover, the registered nurses’ attitudes towards nursing records showed a very strong negative correlation with the integrity and quality of nursing records (r=0.883, p=0.047 and r=0.927, p=0.024, respectively).
