Problem and Needs in an Electronic Medical Record System for Reporting Patient Treatment in Prison Nursing.

Abstract

     This survey research aimed to examine the problem and needs of nursing staff in the use of the medical record system in prison nursing, with the goal of creating and developing a prototype electronic medical record system to support patient treatment reporting in prison nursing. The samples in this study include nursing staff who perform medical record work at healthcare facilities in prisons under the Department of Corrections in Zones 1 – 10. Quantitative data were collected using  a questionnaire administered through simple random sampling, selecting one prison hospital from each zone (10 in total), and qualitative data were collected from in-depth interviews with 10 nursing staff members who perform medical record work at these healthcare facilities.  Data collection took place between July and October 2024.Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics (percentages, averages, and standard deviations), and qualitative data were analysed using content analysis.
     The findings revealed that the majority of the sample group were females (70.0 percent), aged between 40 and 49 years (60.0 percent), held senior professional positions (50.0 percent), had bachelor's degrees (70.0 percent), and had 20-29 years of experience working in healthcare facilities within prisons (50.0 percent).  Overall, their opinions on the problem related to using paper-based medical records were rated at a high level, with an average score of 4.37.
