Nursing Care of a Patient with an Open Left Femoral Fracture Undergoing Surgery and Hemopneumothorax : Case Study

Abstract

     This case study aimed to provide comprehensive nursing care for a 25-year-old Thai male patient who sustained an open fracture of the left femur accompanied by pneumohemothorax of the right lung following a motorcycle collision with a car. The patient was admitted to Saraburi Hospital and was diagnosed with open fracture of the left femur with right lung pneumohemothorax. He underwent surgical procedures including excisional debridement, skeletal traction, and open reduction with internal fixation using an intramedullary nail. Data were collected through a review of the patient’s medical records, followed by problem analysis, nursing care planning, implementation, and evaluation during hospitalization. Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns were used as a framework for health assessment, and Orem’s Nursing Theory was applied to guide nursing interventions.

     The study found that a 25-year-old Thai male patient was admitted to Saraburi Hospital due to a motorcycle accident. The doctor diagnosed an open fracture of the left femur with a right lung pneumohemothorax. He was admitted to the hospital for treatment and performed excisional debridement, skeletal traction, open reduction, and internal fixation using an intramedullary nail. Nurses must have the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to prepare the patient before, during, and after surgery.
