Nursing Care for Pregnant Women Using Amphetamines During Hospital Delivery: Two Case Studies.

Abstract

      This case study aimed to examine the nursing process in two pregnant women using amphetamines who received delivery services in the delivery room of Manjakiri Hospital, Khon Kaen Province. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and medical records. The data was then analyzed to determine nursing diagnoses, provide nursing care according to the nursing process, evaluate nursing outcomes, and summarize the results for a comparative study of the two cases.

      The results showed that pregnant women using amphetamines had a high risk of premature delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, infant hypoxia during labor, and infant withdrawal symptoms, which cตั้งould lead to respiratory arrest or death. Delivery room nurses assessed and predicted these risks, leading to timely diagnosis and nursing care. Preparations were made for delivery, including having a team and neonatal resuscitation equipment ready. The nursing outcomes during and after delivery were positive; the pregnant women did not experience postpartum hemorrhage, and the infants did not experience withdrawal symptoms. Both infants were found to have low birth weight but were otherwise active. Breastfeeding was discontinued, and formula was used until urine amphetamine tests came back normal. Only then were breastfeeding resumed. The mothers remained hospitalized for three consecutive days until no amphetamines were detected in their urine, at which point they were allowed to return home.
