Development of a Participatory Care Model for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Village Health Volunteers in Bupho Subdistrict, Lam Plai Mat District, Buriram Province

Abstract

     This action research aimed to study the development of a participatory care model for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with village health volunteers. The study applied the PAOR action research framework. The samples consisted of 3 groups: 1) 32 samples from network participants selected by purposive sampling 2) 60 village health volunteers and 3) 194 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients selected by stratified random sampling. Quantitative data was collected by the questionnaire, individual behavioral and health status record and focus group discussion guidelines. Data was collected between January to May 2026. Data analysis was performed by descriptive and comparative analysis was performed by paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05. Qualitative data using content analysis.

     The research findings the showed the developed model comprised 6 components, namely the “BUPHO DM CARE Model” 1) Baseline Assessment 2) Understanding Development 3) Participation Network 4) Home Health Care 5) Ongoing Self-Management and 6) Outcome Monitoring. After implementation of the model, the participation level of VHVs significantly increased (p-value<0.001). And the overall level of knowledge and complication-prevention behaviors showed a statistically significant improvement, as compared to before intervention (p-value<0.001). The assessment of individual health status showed that the mean HbA1c level significantly decreased (p-value < 0.001).
