Effectiveness of Nursing Practice Guidelines for Abdominal Trauma Patients Undergoing Laparotomy on Knowledge and Satisfaction of Operating Room Nurses, Udon Thani Hospital.

This study aimed to compare OR nurses' knowledge before and after the implementation of nursing practice guidelines for abdominal trauma patients undergoing laparotomy, and to assess nurses' satisfaction with the guidelines. This one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted among OR nurses at Udon Thani Hospital. Knowledge scores were analyzed in 68 matched pretest–posttest pairs, and satisfaction was analyzed in 85 respondents. The intervention consisted of a 6-hour workshop (3 hours of theory and 3 hours of return demonstration) followed by 4 weeks of on-the-job coaching during guideline implementation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 15.60 (SD = 2.80) to 18.44 (SD = 2.05) out of 20 (W = 0.00, p < .001, rank-biserial correlation = 1.00). Scores increased in 54 nurses (79.4%), remained unchanged in 14 (20.6%), and decreased in none. Overall satisfaction with the guidelines was high (mean = 3.69, SD = 0.43). The highest-rated items, each with a mean of 3.75, were SBAR-based communication and handover and willingness to continue using the guidelines.
