Effects of a Knowledge-Enhancement Program on the Preparation of Clean and Sterile Surgical Instruments among Central Sterile Supply Department and Operating Room Staff at Udon Thani Hospital.

This study aimed to examine the effects of a knowledge-enhancement program on the operational practices for preparing clean and sterile surgical instruments among staff in the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) and the operating room at Udon Thani Hospital. The study employed a quasi-experimental, one-group pre-posttest design. The participants consisted of 42 staff members from the CSSD and the operating room, along with a group of patients who underwent surgery during the specified study period; all participants met the inclusion criteria and voluntarily joined the research project. Data collection took place from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026, involving four sessions over a total of 12 weeks. The research instruments included a general information questionnaire, a knowledge test, an operational behavior assessment form, a satisfaction survey, and a knowledge-enhancement program designed to improve staff proficiency in preparing clean and sterile surgical instruments. The content validity of the instruments was verified by three experts, and their reliability was tested with a group of 30 individuals sharing similar characteristics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and the dependent paired t-test.
Research Results: 1) The mean knowledge score after the implementation of the program was higher than before (pre-program: = 12.26, S.D. = 4.09; post-program:
= 17.26, S.D. = 2.05), with a statistically significant difference (t = -8.61, p < 0.001). 2) The mean behavioral score after the program was significantly higher than before (Z = -5.66, p < 0.001). 3) Data on surgical site infections following the program implementation did not show a downward trend compared to the period prior to the program. 4) Staff in the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) and the operating room at Udon Thani Hospital reported a high level of overall satisfaction (
= 4.04, S.D. = 0.55) with the program designed to enhance knowledge regarding the preparation of sterile surgical instruments.
