Abstract

This study was quasi experimental research by randomized clinical trial two-group pretest-posttest design aimed to evaluate the effects of a modified scapular stabilization exercise program on pain, shoulder disability, and range of motion in patients with shoulder pain at Nong Khai Hospital. A total of 66 participants were divided into a control group and an intervention group, with 33 participants in each group. The control group received conventional physical therapy, while the intervention group received the same treatment combined with an eight-exercise modified scapular stabilization program. Both groups received treatment twice weekly for 6 weeks. Pain, shoulder pain and disability, and shoulder range of motion (ROM) were assessed before and after the intervention using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), and a goniometer, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, independent-samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. After 6 weeks, the median VAS pain score was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (4.0 vs. 5.0; p=.002). SPADI scores decreased significantly in both groups (p<.001). Both groups showed significant improvements in shoulder range of motion in several directions, particularly flexion, external rotation, and internal rotation.
