Development of Surveillance System among Human Rabies Exposure in Community, Thai-Charoen District, Yasothon Province

Abstract

Rabies is one of health problems in Yasothon, of 1 case was reported death and there
were over 60 rabies exposure sampling had been found in animal. People who were
contacted disease likely not concern for medical treatment and vaccination which might be
significantly caused in fatality. This research aims to develop and assess surveillance system
among rabies exposure in community in Yasothon, this action research was used in
accordance with 4 stages, namely; Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. Data
collection from February-May, 2019 by using focus group discussion, depth interviewing,
observation and questionnaire that related to people behavior about rabies and used to
identify descriptive statistic, T-test and Z-test and content analysis for qualitative data.
The result of this study shown that rabies exposure could access in vaccination
program (68.09 %), followed those had moderate level in knowledge, while 73.66 percent
among animals had rabies vaccination coverage. Therefore, development of surveillance
system among rabies exposure was conducted in order to effectively in reporting and was
able to monitor rabies exposure case by using application Line, Google, and disseminating its
manuals as well as set up rabies surveillance networks in community. This system was
carried out which was considered as risk area or had a case death, after implementing
program revealed that the majority of rabies exposure had vaccination coverage at 94.44
percent and had high satisfaction which was statistically significant (proportion diff 17.82,
95%CI 8.83 to 26.81, p-value 0.014) This study should be more encouraging to implement in
other location with casualty concern about rabies and would be able to adjust this system
involving several kinds of health surveillance and prevention.
