ABSTRACT
This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an environmental health literacy (EHL) promotion program on PM2.5 self-protective behaviors among village health volunteers (VHVs) in Wiang Tai Subdistrict, Pai District, Mae Hong Son Province. The sample consisted of 60 VHVs, divided into an experimental group and a control group of 30 each. The experimental group received a six-week program based on Nutbeam’s health literacy levels and Finn and O’Fallon’s EHL concept, covering six EHL domains in weekly sessions, while the control group received usual care. Data were collected using an EHL questionnaire and a PM2.5 self-protective behavior questionnaire, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test and independent t-test.
The results revealed that, after the intervention, the experimental group’s mean EHL score increased from 100.90 ± 17.82 to 146.17 ± 3.94, the self-health surveillance behavior score from 38.77 ± 8.90 to 58.23 ± 1.92, and the exposure prevention behavior score from 45.47 ± 7.57 to 59.20 ± 1.27 (p < 0.001). All post-intervention scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.001). The program is effective in improving EHL and PM2.5 self-protective behaviors among VHVs, and health service units in haze-affected areas should implement it before the haze season, with long-term follow-up during the actual haze season.
