Abstract

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to determine the prevalence of e-cigarette use and its association with alcohol consumption among youth in educational institutions in Udon Thani Province, Thailand. A multistage random sampling method was used to select 288 youth aged 18-24 years from two educational institutions. Data were collected via an online questionnaire. The association was analyzed using multiple logistic regression. The majority of participants were female (57.64%), aged 20 years or older (51.04%), and undergraduate students (62.85%). The prevalence of alcohol consumption and e-cigarette use was 42.71% (95%CI = 37.08-48.53) and 20.49% (95%CI = 16.19-25.67), respectively. Among current e-cigarette users, 52.54% expressed a desire to quit. A statistically significant association was found between alcohol consumption and e-cigarette use; participants who consumed alcohol were 9.25 times more likely to use e-cigarettes compared to non-consumers (AOR = 9.25; 95%CI = 3.36-20.78, p < 0.001). The prevalence of e-cigarette use among youth in Udon Thani is relatively high compared to the national average (16.5% in 2024), with use predominantly clustered among alcohol consumers. Effective interventions are required, including promoting health literacy regarding the harms of e-cigarettes, mitigating social reinforcement from peers and family, enforcing stricter access controls, implementing alcohol- and e-cigarette-free campus policies, and actively monitoring online sales channels.
