EFFECTS OF WALKING AT A PRESCRIBED INTENSITY COMBINED WITH CUCUMBER CONSUMPTION ON BODY MASS INDEX AND BODY FAT PERCENTAGE IN OVERWEIGHT INDIVIDUALS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of walking at a prescribed intensity combined with cucumber consumption on body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage in overweight individuals. The participants were 50 female volunteers, divided into two groups. The experimental group (n = 25) participated in a walking program at a prescribed intensity for 40 minutes, three times per week, along with consuming 200 grams of cucumber daily. The control group (n = 25) followed the same walking program without cucumber consumption. The intervention lasted for 8 weeks. Data were collected by measuring weight and height to calculate BMI, and a body composition analyzer was used to assess body fat percentage. The data were analyzed using a t-test at a significance level of .05. The results showed that the experimental group significantly reduced their BMI from 31.28 ± 8.37 to 28.62 ± 5.86 kg/m² and their body fat percentage from 32.36 ± 10.90% to 27.88 ± 5.36% (p = .001), with effect sizes of 0.37 and 0.52, indicating small-to-moderate and moderate effects, respectively. The control group showed only slight changes, with an effect size of 0.04, which is considered negligible. When comparing the two groups after the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly greater reductions in both BMI and body fat percentage than the control group (p = .004 and .002, respectively).
In conclusion, regular walking at a prescribed intensity combined with cucumber consumption is an effective strategy for reducing body weight and fat in overweight individuals and may serve as a sustainable approach for health promotion.
