Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of arm muscle strength training using a medicine ball on rugby passing distance among 20 male rugby union athletes from Thailand National Sports University, Mahasarakham Campus. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: a medicine ball training group and a control group that continued regular training, with 10 participants in each group. The study employed a simple randomized controlled experimental design. The training program was conducted for 6 weeks, three days per week. The variables examined included hand and arm muscle strength measured by a hand-grip strength test, performance in the 30-second modified push-up test, passing distance, and, because rugby passing is a whole-body movement that relies on the kinetic chain and force transfer from the lower body through the trunk to the arms, leg muscle power measured using a Keiser Leg Press Machine. The results showed that, after 6 weeks of training, the medicine ball training group had significantly greater hand-grip strength and number of repetitions in the 30-second modified push-up test compared with pre-training values, and the changes were significantly greater than those observed in the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, passing distance in the medicine ball training group increased significantly both within the group and when compared between groups, whereas the control group showed no significant changes in these variables. For leg muscle power measured using the Keiser Leg Press Machine, no statistically significant differences were found either within groups or between groups. The study concluded that medicine ball training can effectively improve arm muscle strength and endurance, as well as enhance rugby passing performance by increasing passing distance. These improvements may be due to the training characteristics that are specific to passing skills and the coordinated work of multiple muscle groups. The findings can be appropriately applied as a guideline for designing training programs to develop the physical fitness of rugby football athletes
