THE HYROX PHENOMENON IN THAILAND: FROM FITNESS TO COMPETITION

Abstract
Recreation in contemporary society is undergoing a transformation from activities oriented toward health and leisure at the individual level to a performance-oriented participation regime that systematically integrates competition, measurement, and the communication of identity at the societal level. This article aims to analyze HYROX as a contemporary recreational phenomenon within the Thai context, to compare its characteristics with other forms of physical activity in terms of participation structure and activity identity, to synthesize the transition of recreation from individual-level exercise to competitive participation at the societal level, and to propose guidelines for appropriate, safe, and sustainable participation through systematic knowledge synthesis and conceptual analysis. The findings indicate that HYROX is not merely a hybrid exercise activity but rather operates as a data-driven recreational ecosystem that integrates competitive structures, physical fitness, and a culture of measurement into an integrated and unified system, resulting in the redefinition of the body as a form of performative potential capable of generating value and social recognition through verifiable outcomes. Structural comparison further reveals that HYROX represents a convergence of endurance-based activities, experience-oriented activities, and hybrid fitness-oriented activities, thereby transforming participation into a process of identity construction within a globally standardized competitive system. At the same time, participation in the Thai context is shaped by the networked structures of urban fitness establishments, digital media, and training communities, thereby embedding exercise behavior as an integral part of contemporary lifestyles. In addition, this study proposes the Hybrid Fitness Sustainability Framework as a dynamic social system that integrates dimensions of meaning, behavior, data, and structure, emphasizing the balance between competition and long-term well-being, the management of risks associated with measurement-driven culture, and the appropriate application of sports science principles. This framework aims to elevate recreation into a structured system of participation that is interconnected with lifestyle, urban structures, and health policy in Thailand, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of physical fitness, well-being, and social capital in the long term.
