THE EFFECTS OF A FITBALL EXERCISE PROGRAM ON BODY COMPOSITION AND BALANCE IN OLDER ADULTS AT THE ELDERLY HEALTH PROMOTION CENTER, BOROMARAJONANI COLLEGE OF NURSING, SAPPASITTHIPRASONG
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate and compare the effects of a Fitball exercise program on body composition and balance among older adults at the Elderly Health Promotion Center, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Sappasitthiprasong. The participants were 24 women aged 60–79 years, divided into an experimental group (n = 12) and a control group (n = 12). The experimental group participated in the Fitball exercise program for 55 minutes per session, three days per week, for eight weeks. The control group continued their usual activities. Participants were assessed for functional ability in activities of daily living and exercise readiness. Body composition and balance were assessed before and after the intervention using a body composition analyzer and the Timed Up and Go test, respectively. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviations, paired-samples t-tests, and independent-samples t-tests, with statistical significance set at .05. After eight weeks, the experimental group’s body fat percentage decreased from 21.54 ± 5.24 to 18.88 ± 4.70 (p < .001), while muscle mass increased from 34.29 ± 2.58 to 35.83 ± 2.74 (p < .001). Timed Up and Go performance also improved, with the time decreasing from 9.03 ± 1.09 to 7.50 ± 0.97 (p < .001). No statistically significant changes were observed in the control group at the .05 level. These findings suggest that the Fitball exercise program may improve body composition and balance in older adults and may be a useful approach for promoting exercise in this population.
