Nursing counseling for HIV patients with complications from antiretroviral drugs : Case study

Abstract

     Objective: To study the nursing process and counseling for HIV patients with complications from antiretroviral drugs.
     Results: Thai female patient, 42-year-old, came for consultation at the counseling clinic on 2 March, 2022 with important symptoms: shortness of breath, a lump on the left side of neck, sores in mouth, and eating little before coming to the hospital for 3 weeks. Blood test results found that the patient was infected with HIV from her husband in 2021 and did not take medication continuously. After taking antiretroviral drugs, patient had a nausea, vomiting, and symptoms of hepatitis. The patient is discouraged and then frequently stop taking medicine. Period before counseling, nurses build relationships and find patient problems. Consultation period, patient lack knowledge about medicine and how to behave. The patient had complications from antiretroviral drugs and a risk of infection from opportunistic diseases. The patient was changed medication and given advice along with the mother. After giving advice and the patient was continuous flow up. Patient received continuous medication regularly and behave more correctly. Sometimes, the patient's mother comes to pick up the medicine instead.
     Conclusion: The role of caring and counseling nurses helps people with HIV and AIDS for understanding about drug
use, maintaining health and cooperate in maintaining and taking medicine continuously including the participation
of caregivers.
