Factors related to oral health care behavior of early elderly people at BanNa Nuea Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospital, Kantang District, Trang Province.

This survey research aimed to study personal factors, knowledge, attitudes, and oral health care behaviors among early elderly persons and to examine the relationship between personal factors, knowledge, attitudes, and oral health care behaviors among early elderly persons at Ban Na Nuea Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital, Kantang District, Trang Province. The sample consisted of 121 early elderly persons from Ban Na Nuea Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital, Kantang District, Trang Province. The questionnaire was administered in four parts: personal factors, knowledge, attitudes, and oral health care behaviors. The questionnaire was examined for content validity by experts. The IOC value was between 0.67 and 1. The reliability was analyzed using the KR-20 value of 0.794 and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.869. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared, and Pearson's rank test, with a statistical significance level of 0.05.
The research results found that the majority of the sample were female (52.1%), the majority were aged 60-64 years (59.50%), the majority were married (76.00%), the majority were educated (77.68%), the majority were farmers (59.50%), the majority had an average monthly income between 1,000-5,000 baht, 42.9% had underlying diseases (93.38%), the majority were hypertensive (51.20%), followed by diabetes (25.60%), lived with spouse (60.4%), the majority received dental services (66.94%) at government hospitals (29.75%), the majority received oral health care information (68.6%), mostly from village health volunteers (39.70%), the majority had high level of knowledge about oral health care (67.80%), moderate attitude (Mean=3.55, S.D.=0.39) and low level of behavior (Mean=2.81, S.D. = 0.50). Correlation analysis revealed that personal factors, including gender, age, marital status, education, occupation, income, underlying diseases, residence, dental service receipt, and information exposure, were not significantly related to oral health care behaviors among early elderly individuals. Knowledge and attitudes were negatively correlated with oral health care behaviors among early elderly individuals at a low level (r = -0.209, p-value = 0.022) and (r = -0.272, p-value = 0.003), respectively, with statistical significance at the 0.05 level.
