Development of health care models for the elderly. By community participation In Wang Khiri Subdistrict, Huai Yot District, Trang Province.

Abstract

This participatory action research aimed to: 1) explore the health care context for the elderly through community participation, 2) develop a community-based elderly health care model, and 3) evaluate its implementation in Wangkhiri Subdistrict, Huai Yot District, Trang Province. The study involved 248 elderly participants and key stakeholders, including subdistrict health personnel, village health volunteers, community leaders, and family members. Data collection was conducted in three phases: (1) contextual and needs assessment, (2) implementation of health promotion activities, and (3) reflection through community forums. Instruments included questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and observation forms. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used for data analysis. Results revealed that most elderly participants had moderate levels of health knowledge and behaviors, particularly needing improvement in physical activity and mental health. Their participation was generally active, especially in activities with direct benefits, such as health services and peer support groups. The reflection phase highlighted positive changes at individual, family, and community levels. The model enhanced the value, role, and dignity of the elderly as co-creators of community well-being.
