INFLUENCE OF KNOWLEDGE AND NEEDS ON COMMUNITY-LEVEL RUNNING PARTICIPATION: EVIDENCE FROM PHON THONG DISTRICT, ROI ET PROVINCE

Abstract

This cross-sectional survey research aimed to 1) examine the levels of health-related running knowledge and public needs for running activities; 2) analyze the influence of knowledge and needs on running participation; and 3) investigate the mediating role of public needs. The sample consisted of 400 individuals aged 12 and older in Phon Thong District, Roi Et Province, selected through multi-stage sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire with an Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) of 0.93 and reliability ranging from 0.81 to 0.88. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis, and mediation analysis using the bootstrapping method. The results revealed that the sample’s needs for running activities were at a very high level ( = 4.32, SD = 0.72), while running participation was at a high level ( = 4.02, SD = 0.82), and health-related running knowledge was at a moderate level ( = 1.48, SD = 0.79). Multiple regression analysis showed that needs and knowledge collectively predicted running participation by 33.4% (R2 = .334, p < .001), with needs being the strongest predictor (β = .547). Furthermore, needs were found to function as a partial mediator between running knowledge and participation with statistical significance. These findings suggest that community-based physical activity promotion should prioritize environmental management and activity designs that respond to public needs, alongside targeted health education, to ensure the sustainability of health behaviors.
