THE EFFECTS OF NINE-SQUARE AEROBIC DANCE ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS IN UPPER PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract
This study aimed to examine The Effects of Nine-Square Aerobic Dance on Physical Fitness and Fundamental Movement Skills in Upper Primary School Students. The sample consisted of 25 Grade 5–6 students selected through purposive sampling. Participants engaged in a nine-square grid aerobic dance program comprising 12 exercises for a period of 6 weeks, with two sessions per week, each lasting 30–45 minutes. The variables measured included body fat percentage (Skinfold measurement), flexibility (sit-and-reach test), muscular power (vertical jump), cardiovascular endurance (3-minute step test), upper body muscle strength (modified push-ups in 30 seconds), muscular endurance (sit-ups in 60 seconds), and fundamental movement skills (Canadian agility and movement skill assessment). Pre-test and post-test results were compared using a paired t-test. The results revealed that body fat percentage significantly decreased, while flexibility, muscular power, cardiovascular endurance, and fundamental movement skills significantly improved at the .05 level (p < .05). However, no significant differences were found in upper body muscle strength and muscular endurance. In conclusion, the nine-square grid aerobic dance program effectively improved multiple components of physical fitness and fundamental movement skills in upper primary school students. This program can be applied as a school-based physical activity to promote students’ health and enhance their physical fitness development.
