PREVALENCE AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RISK OF MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN SISAKET PROVINCE

Abstract

This descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence and factors associated with the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among older adults in Mueang District, Sisaket Province, Thailand. A total of 400 older adults aged 60 years and above were recruited using multi-stage random sampling. Data were collected between October and December 2025 using a structured questionnaire covering personal characteristics, work-related ergonomic risk behaviors, and the Standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and binary logistic regression analysis. The results showed that participants had a mean age of 65.23 ± 5.42 years; the majority were female (60.00%) and engaged in farming/agriculture (61.00%). The prevalence of being at risk for musculoskeletal disorders was 79.75%. Overall, 86.50% reported pain or discomfort during the past 12 months, with the knee (33.50%), back (21.00%), and hand/wrist (16.25%) being the most commonly affected body regions. More than half of the participants (56.50%) reported severe to very severe pain intensity. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that being female (AOR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.02–2.74), engaging in farming/agriculture (AOR = 3.24, 95% CI: 1.85–5.69), working in the same position continuously for more than 20 minutes (AOR = 2.95, 95% CI: 1.74–4.98), frequent twisting or turning of the body (AOR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.63–4.67), repetitive hand or arm movements (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.34–3.65), and frequently lifting objects heavier than 10 kg (AOR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.29–3.69) were significantly associated with the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (p < .05). These findings indicate that musculoskeletal disorders among older adults are significantly associated with sex, occupation, and physically demanding work-related behaviors. The results can serve as baseline information for developing health promotion programs and ergonomic behavior modification strategies for older adults, particularly those engaged in agricultural work, in order to reduce exposure to ergonomic risk factors and prevent long-term musculoskeletal disorders in this population.
