This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the level of social support and determine the influence of social support on glycemic control among patients with diabetes mellitus in Bang Khan District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The sample consisted of 340 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The sample size was calculated using Yamane’s formula, and stratified random sampling was employed according to subdistricts. The research instrument was a questionnaire consisting of three sections: general information, types of social support, and sources of social support. Content validity was assessed by three experts, yielding content validity index values ranging from 0.67 to 1.00. Reliability was examined using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, with an overall reliability value of 0.93. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression, with the level of statistical significance set at .05.
The results showed that most participants were female (77.65%), with a mean age of 53.86 years. The majority of participants were able to achieve glycemic control, accounting for 70.00%. Regarding the types of social support, most participants reported a high level of support across all dimensions. Informational support had the highest proportion of high-level support (98.82%), followed by emotional support (96.18%). Regarding sources of support, family support had the highest proportion of high-level support (89.41%). The multivariable analysis revealed that emotional support, instrumental support, appraisal support, support from friends and neighbors, and support from healthcare providers significantly influenced glycemic control. Instrumental support had the strongest influence on glycemic control (AOR = 18.58, 95% CI = 3.46–99.62, p < .001). In conclusion, social support is an important factor that promotes glycemic control among patients with diabetes mellitus. Therefore, continuous care approaches emphasizing the involvement of family members, communities, and healthcare providers should be developed.
