Abstract

This cross-sectional survey research aimed to examine the levels of health literacy, access to health information, and competence in caring for patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as well as to analyze the influence of health literacy and access to health information on the care competence of village health volunteers in Mueang Krabi District, Krabi Province. The sample consisted of 313 village health volunteers selected through proportionate stratified random sampling followed by simple random sampling. The research instrument was a four-part questionnaire covering demographic characteristics, health literacy, access to health information, and competence in caring for patients with NCDs. Content validity was assessed by three experts, and the questionnaire demonstrated a reliability coefficient of .79. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple linear regression analysis.

The findings revealed that the overall levels of health literacy, access to health information, and competence in caring for patients with NCDs were high (M = 2.79, SD = 0.64; M = 3.94, SD = 0.59; and M = 3.90, SD = 0.58, respectively). The eight predictor variables jointly explained 46.80% of the variance in care competence (R² = .468, adjusted R² = .454, F(8, 304) = 33.43, p < .001). The variables that significantly influenced care competence were information application skills, information sources, decision-making skills, and frequency of receiving health information. These findings suggest that public health agencies should strengthen village health volunteers’ skills in applying health information and making appropriate decisions, while also developing accurate, accessible, and continuously updated health information systems to support their care of patients with NCDs.
