Abstract

Hypertension is an increasing Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) in the Thai population, stemming from a food culture that heavily relies on seasonings, leading to excessive sodium consumption. To address this problem, this study investigated the effects of the measuring spoon for healthy program on the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and sodium intake behaviors among people with hypertension. A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design was used. The sample consisted of 20 people with hypertension receiving treatment at Don Manao Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital, Suphan Buri Province. The research instruments consisted of the following: 1) The measuring spoon for healthy program, developed by the researchers under the KAP (Knowledge, Action, and Appropriateness) framework, comprising three main components: (1) knowledge about the benefits of controlling sodium intake and preventing complications from hypertension; (2) fostering a positive attitude towards low-sodium food consumption; and (3) modifying sodium consumption behavior using the innovative “Good Sodium Measuring Spoon” as a cooking tool. The program underwent content validity testing and was revised based on feedback before implementation. 2) An assessment scale to measure knowledge, attitudes, and sodium consumption behavior. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

The study found that the sample group showed statistically significant increases in knowledge (7.80 ± 1.10), attitude (4.05 ± 0.37), and sodium consumption behavior (2.76 ± 0.16) (p < 0.001). The measuring spoon for healthy program was effective in increasing knowledge, attitudes, and sodium intake behaviors among individuals with hypertension, enabling participants to adjust their sodium intake behaviors more appropriately, and is a guideline for promoting health for this group of patients effectively.
